Frequently Asked Questions

Do Shepherd Hut frames have cavity space for insulation?

Yes, all of our frames have cavity space for insulation at the roof, floor and ceiling. Each frame has a 100mm roof and floor cavity, with an 80mm wall cavity.

Are bespoke frame sizes available?

All of our shepherd huts are available with an external width of 2.24m (2.15m internal). Our frames are available in three standard lengths: 4.2m, 4.8m and 5.4m. Longer bespoke frames are available, at intervals of 600mm. Contact us for pricing for to bespoke sizes.

Are your Shepherd Hut frames easy to build?

Yes! Our frame kits are exceptionally easy to build. We typically advise that they can be assembled within two hours (with a tea break!). All you’ll need is PVA glue, a hammer and some clamps.

What’s the lead time when I order a shepherd hut frame or component?

We’ll aim to get your items to you within 4-8 weeks of receiving your order. Lead times for each product differ, these are noted on each product description.

How are orders delivered?

We’ll ship your shepherd hut frame / components to you on a flat bed trailer, ready to be assembled.

What are your Shepherd Hut frames made of?

All of our shepherd hut frames are made from 18mm structural spruce wood, which we laminate to form a 36mm frame. All of the wood used in our frames is sourced from FSC certified sustainable plantations.

Do Harrogate Huts supply external cladding or insulation?

Unfortunately not. We supply only the components that we manufacture here in our Harrogate workshop (frames, chassis, doors & windows etc). External cladding would typically be available from a local timber or metal panel supplier.

How many roof sheets will I need?

This varies depending on the length of frame you order, here is a quick guide:

  • 3m and 3.6m shepherd hut frames require 4x roof sheets
  • 4.2m shepherd hut frames require 5x roof sheets
  • 4.8 and 5.4m shepherd hut frames require 6x roof sheets
  • 6m and 6.6m shepherd hut frames require 7x roof sheets

Do you need planning permission for a Shepherds Hut?

In many cases planning permission is not required for a shepherds hut, though this is a tricky question to answer, as it varies from one planning district council to another. Variable factors on this can include whether the hut is movable (i.e. on wheels) and how regularly it will be moved (i.e. every 28 days). Equally, your planning district council’s rules may vary depending on whether the hut will be used as accomodation for example. We’d recommend doing your research locally, and contacting your local planning authority with any specific queries.
